Improving Follow-Up After Emergency Room Visits
Connecting Adults With Resources
Timely and coordinated care after emergency room visits for substance use and mental health can help improve health outcomes for Medicaid members.
How We Engage
The All Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) Quality Improvement Collaborative helps promote timely follow-up and best practices by engaging with systems of care.
Our Focus
We encourage follow-up within seven days of an emergency room visit, align processes and share best practices, and improve follow-up quality measures.
The Adult Behavioral Health Project
Goals and Project Areas
Our goal is to increase seven-day follow-ups for Medicaid members ages 18 and older who experience an emergency room visit for substance use disorder or mental health diagnosis, in order to ensure that more Ohioans are put in touch with the right treatment and resources to improve their outcomes.
We are pursuing this goal in the Central and Northwest Ohio regions, and have set SMART AIMs goals to measure our success. Please note that SMART AIMs may be adjusted based on new information.
Our Goal
41.8%
Rate of seven-day follow-up visits after an ER visit for substance use disorder (FUA) by Dec. 31, 2026.
Our Goal
45.69%
Rate of seven-day follow-up visits after an ER visit for mental health (EDM-A) by Dec. 31, 2026.
